Several engineering and science students mentored by COE faculty are recipients of the Spring 2024 AJC Merit Research Scholars from Northeastern’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, which funds a co-op in the laboratory of a Northeastern University STEM faculty member.

Research To Optimize Large-Scale iPSC Manufacturing
Two papers titled “Stochastic Biological System-of-Systems Modelling for iPSC Culture” and “Metabolic Regulatory Network Kinetic Modeling with Multiple Isotopic Tracers for iPSCs” led by Wei Xie, MIE assistant professor, were published in the journals Communications Biology – Nature and Biotechnology and Bioengineering.

Capstone Students Design Robotic Boat To Combat Invasive Plant
Engineering capstone students built an autonomous robotic boat equipped with a hyperspectral camera to map the invasive hydrilla plant and help scientists control its spread in Connecticut waters. The project is a collaboration among the ECE and MIE departments, the Robotics and Intelligent Vehicles Research Lab, and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.

Northeastern Team Places Third at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Industrial Engineering Case Competition
Daunte Pean, E’25, Karim Kane, E’25, and Lucas Kirma, E’25, industrial engineering, won third place at Disney’s national Industrial Engineering Case Competition. As part of the case study competition, the team took on the role as outside consultants for the city of Dallas and gave their recommendation on what form of entertainment should be built.

Networking Fair Highlights Innovative PhD Research
Northeastern University’s PhD Network recently hosted an Innovation Research Fair in which PhD candidates presented their research to 14 companies, including Takeda, Amgen, and Merck, spanning what’s now the largest biotech hub in the country—Greater Boston.
