Innovating Hydrogen Fuel Cells
MIE Associate Professor Yi Zheng received a research grant of $208,957 to work on “Innovative Hybrid PEM Hydrogen Fuel Cell” from THETA LLC of Fall River, Massachusetts. The project studies the biomimetic hybrid hydrogen fuel cell as a practical alternative, addressing key barriers to widespread adoption.

$1M NSF Award for Modeling Group Behavior To Fight Epidemics
MIE Associate Professor Babak Heydari, in collaboration with CSSH Professor Dan O’Brien (Public Policy), COS Associate Professor Gabor Lippner (Math), and CSSH Professor Silvia Prina (Economics), was awarded a $1 million NSF grant for “No One Lives in a Bubble: Incorporating Group Dynamics Into Epidemic Models,” to build computational models for group behaviors.

ECS Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship To Develop More Sustainable EV Batteries
MIE Assistant Professor Juner Zhu is one of only three individuals to receive an Electrochemical Society Toyota Young Investigator Fellowship this year. He will conduct research to assess the condition of batteries in electric vehicles using mechano-electrochemical techniques that will identify a battery’s physical changes to determine its overall health.

Using Sulfur Crystals on Mars To Make New Discoveries
MIE Professor Moneesh Upmanyu says the recent discovery of pure sulfur on Mars—a first for the Mars Science Laboratory mission—could lead to more discoveries as the sulfur crystals may provide information on how the surface of Mars evolved over time and help scientists reconstruct the history of the planet.
