Inaugural College of Engineering Young Alumni Impact Award Recipients

With only one awardee for each engineering discipline, this is an elite achievement. Medication Plus Support Groups Increases Effectiveness of Opioid Use Disorder Treatment
MIE Associate Professor Muhammad Noor E Alam’s research, published in the International Journal of Medical Informatics, found that people in treatment for opioid addiction are 25% more likely to complete medication if they also attend a support group.

Capstone Project Leads to High-Speed Drone To Shadow Race Cars
For their capstone project, a group of mechanical engineering students led by David Lobo, E’24, developed a high-speed, first-person-view drone capable of traveling 187 mph while shadowing race cars. The drone could be a game changer in high-speed video capture.

NSF CAREER Award for Generative AI To Advance Biomanufacturing
MIE Assistant Professor Wei Xie was awarded a $596,920 NSF CAREER Award for “Mechanism-Informed AI for Biological Systems-of-Systems To Accelerate Biomanufacturing Systems Integration and Innovations.” The project aims to create innovative bioprocess-specific AI for general biological ecosystems that can facilitate flexible and intelligent on-demand manufacturing systems for biopharmaceuticals.

The first cohort of trainees of the NSF NRT Platforms for Exchange and Allocation of Resources grant share the value of the program’s interdisciplinary research, stipends, curriculum, seminars, and faculty mentorship. Applications are now open to be a trainee for the fall 2025 semester.

Improving the Strength and Toughness of Soft Materials
MIE Assistant Professor Ruobing Bai, in collaboration with Michigan State University, is leading a $705,664 NSF grant for the “Mechanics of End-Linked Polymer Networks With Strain-Induced Crystallization Regulated by Topological Defects.” The research will facilitate emerging applications such as soft robotics, medical devices, and wearable electronics.
