Resilient & Sustainable Service Systems

Resilient & Sustainable Service Systems is an interdisciplinary field dedicated to enhancing the sustainability, adaptability, and resilience of sectors such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, and more. Through innovative research and solutions, it aims to improve the performance and long-term viability of these sectors while addressing environmental and societal challenges.

Resilient systems are designed to effectively respond and recover from disruptive events, encompassing interconnected stakeholders, infrastructures, operations, and tasks. Our research focuses on various complex systems, including supply chains, transportation, manufacturing, energy, and healthcare infrastructures, aiming to enhance their resiliency, adaptability, and preparedness. This involves making informed decisions throughout the system’s life cycle, such as detecting potential disruptions, analyzing cost-effective risk reduction strategies, managing conflicting objectives among stakeholders, and optimizing resource allocation. Through interdisciplinary collaborations and the application of operations research and industrial engineering tools, we address the challenges of designing and managing resilient systems.

Within the MIE department at Northeastern, we have a strong, talented group of researchers dedicated to Resilient & Sustainable Service Systems.
