DESCRIPTION:The New England Complex Fluids Workshop encourages collaboration among researchers from industry and academia studying soft condensed matter\, broadly speaking\, with applications extending to biomedical sciences and industry. Workshops consist of invited talks and several sessions of contributed “sound-bites” which are approximately three minutes long\, in which students and postdocs are invited to introduce their research to the community. DESCRIPTION:The College of Engineering is excited to announce the fourth annual COE PhD Research Expo\, and we invite all COE PhD students to submit a poster abstract. This is a wonderful opportunity to highlight your research and meet alumni\, academic\, and industry leaders. \nThe expo will take place during COE’s Graduate Candidate Day\, where PhD candidates could learn first-hand about the exciting research our PhD students are conducting. \n***We are closely monitoring COVID-related updates and abiding by the University policies to ensure safe attendance of the event. DESCRIPTION:The Vinod Sahney Distinguished Lecture Series on Health Systems Innovation welcomes Paul Biddinger\, Chief Preparedness and Continuity Officer at Mass General Brigham\, to Northeastern University\, as he presents his research on “The Evolution of Healthcare Emergency Preparedness and Response in the Context of COVID-19.” Dr. Biddinger is an active researcher in the field of emergency preparedness and has lectured nationally and internationally on topics of preparedness and disaster medicine. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters on multiple topics related to disaster medicine and emergency medical operations and has responded to numerous prior disaster events\, including Hurricane Katrina\, Superstorm Sandy\, the Boston Marathon bombings\, the Nepal earthquakes\, and many others.

DESCRIPTION:The Galante Engineering Business program will be hosting a speaker on Thursday\, October 17 from 6:00-7:30pm in Raytheon Amphitheater. \nNancy Zupick\, the manager of Arena Simulation Consulting Services at Rockwell Automation. She will be giving a talk about the temperament required to be successful in a consulting career. Ms. Zupick is based out of Coraopolis\, Pennsylvania. She has been working with discrete event simulation for over twenty-two years and has worked on countless simulation projects across various industries. Ms. Zupick is the co-author of the Simulation with Arena textbook. She is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Industrial Engineering.

DESCRIPTION:The Vinod Sahney Distinguished Lecture Series on Health Systems Innovation \n“A Health Care Experiment Called Massachusetts: Lessons for the Nation” \nAndrew Dreyfus\, President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) \nMassachusetts has long been at the vanguard of health care in the U.S. – from the country’s first public health department to its landmark universal health coverage law and statewide cost control framework. What can the Massachusetts experience tell us about the nature of health system change\, the potential for improvement\, the challenges that remain and what it all means in the run up to 2020? \nBio \nAndrew Dreyfus is President and Chief Executive Officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA)\, one of the largest independent Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in the country. During his tenure\, BCBSMA has consistently been recognized as one of the nation’s best health plans for member satisfaction and quality. Mr. Dreyfus assumed the role of CEO in September 2010. \nMr. Dreyfus joined BCBSMA in 2005 as Executive Vice President\, Health Care Services. During his tenure\, BCBSMA created the Alternative Quality Contract\, one of the largest commercial payment reform initiatives in the nation. Previously Mr. Dreyfus served as founding President of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation\, where he developed the “Roadmap to Coverage\,” a multi-year initiative which led to the passage of the state’s landmark 2006 Health Reform Law. \nPrior to his appointment at Blue Cross\, Mr. Dreyfus was Executive Vice President of the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) and held a number of senior health and regulatory positions in Massachusetts state government. \n\nVinod K. Sahney PhD is a Distinguished University Professor at Northeastern University. His healthcare industry experience includes over 30 years at Henry Ford Health System\, MI and Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA as Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer. He is a founding member of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the Group Practice Improvement Network. He is a founding member and past President of Society for Health Systems (SHS) focused on improving Health Care Operations. Dr. Sahney’s professional recognition includes The Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Award for lifetime contributions to the field of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
