Zheng Receives ASME Rising Star Award

Yi Zheng, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, received an ASME Rising Star in Mechanical Engineering Award, which recognizes early career researchers who have received prestigious national awards.

Zheng received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award for “Nanoscale Radiative Heat Transfer for Enhanced Thermal Infrared Energy Conversion and Cooling,” research that established fundamental knowledge about nanoscale radiative heat transfer.

The Rising Stars Awards were presented at theĀ International Mechanical Engineering Celebration and Showcase, a reception that included a poster session where researchers presented their work. The celebration was part of the International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition.

Earlier this year, Zheng was appointed as an ASME Fellow for his exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession, particularly in the research field of micro/nanoscale heat transfer for sustainable energy harvesting, conversion, and storage.

Through his startup Planck Energies, a Northeastern spinout, Zheng is developing a cooling paint that reflects heat waves away from and draws existing heat out of buildings. It could reduce carbon emissions and electricity usage by reducing the need for air conditioning.
