SUMMARY:Women in Engineering at Northeastern
DESCRIPTION:Women in Engineering (WIE) at Northeastern College of Engineering (CoE)\, in collaboration with the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Departments\, ECE PhD Student Association (EPSA) and MIE Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) student groups\, is hosting a special gathering for female-identifying PhD students\, postdocs\, and faculty from the ECE and MIE departments. The purpose of this event is to check in with our students\, hear their thoughts and concerns\, and ensure they feel supported—not only to strengthen their sense of belonging but also to equip them with the necessary skills for their future careers. \nThe gathering will take place on Monday\, October 7th\, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Curry Student Center Ballroom\, with lunch provided. \nTo better understand the experiences\, motivations\, and challenges faced by female-identifying PhD students and Postdocs at Northeastern University in the MIE and ECE departments\, we’ve prepared the following questions\, which will be answered anonymously: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd64OWZK3yxEQmzmn3yCXNYJyBi5GaiarxGJjUnTKWKtBFUTg/viewform?usp=sf_link \nYour feedback will play a crucial role in shaping college programming\, departmental support\, and potential admissions changes to better support female-identifying and non-binary individuals in the College of Engineering. While the survey is focused on driving meaningful changes within the CoE\, some areas\, like university-wide policies\, may be beyond its direct influence. Nonetheless\, your input will contribute to broader discussions and advocacy efforts across the university. We will report the cumulative results of this survey to your departments\, COE\, as well as Northeastern University.

SUMMARY:Ignorance Is Bliss: A Career Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:  \nDean Gregory D. Abowd will present his SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award Acceptance Lecture \nDate: Tues.\, June 13\, 2023 \nTime: 5:30 to 7:15 PM\, reception following Dean Abowd’s talk \nPlace: In-Person and Livestream\nBostonCHI meeting at Northeastern University in ISEC Auditorium (102 ISEC)\, and reception in ISEC Atrium \nRegistration is appreciated but not required. View BostonCHI for more information. \nPresentation Abstract: In 1988\, as a graduate student grappling to find a research identity\, Gregory D. Abowd accidentally discovered the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Over the past 35 years\, he pursued a passion for applying the tools and techniques of computing to uncover how the human experience with technology can be understood and transformed. That leap into HCI was just the first of a number of leaps of faith. Abowd’s career has been a series of shifting research agendas\, each one inspired by some life events. In all cases\, he was buoyed by a bevy of talented and supportive colleagues\, advisors and advisees alike\, who gave him the courage to jump into a research topic that he didn’t know much about. That “ignorance” has allowed him to be more fearless than he had the right to be. In this talk\, Abowd will reflect on his professional journey\, hoping to inspire others to dispel fear of the unknown and unlock their potential. Life\, like research\, is best when shared with others whom you can respect and befriend. \n—————————————— \nGregory D. Abowd\, dean of the College of Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University\, has received the Lifetime Research Award from the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI). The award is presented to individuals for “the best\, most fundamental\, and influential research contributions to the study of human-computer interaction (HCI)” and is awarded for a lifetime of innovation and leadership. \n

SUMMARY:MathWorks Week: Climate\, Energy and the Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:Join MathWorks engineers and Northeastern faculty for these insightful seminars in Climate Change\, Quantum Computing\, and AI. \n\nClimate\, Energy and the Built Environment\nTuesday\, March 1\, 10:30 am – 11:30 am\nRegister: MathWorksNUSymposiumClimate.eventbrite.com \nInsights of climate changes from the Common Era: an Artificial Intelligence view\nJianghao Wang\, MathWorks \nThe rapid global warming seen in observations over the past 150 years shows nearly global coherence\, the spatiotemporal coherence of climate epochs earlier in the Common Era (the past 2\,000 years)\, however\, has yet to be robustly tested. Understanding how the climate system works and how historical temperature changes shed light on the study of anthropogenic climate change. \nModeling the Stochastic Dynamics of Rotating Wind Turbine Blades\nLuca Caracoglia\, Professor\, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering \nThis presentation describes the results of recent research activities\, examining the dynamic modeling of wind turbine blades under the influence of various sources of input error and noise. The presentation will focus on the flutter phenomenon. Flutter is a flow-induced dynamic instability that results from the coupling between flap-wise bending mode and torsional mode of the rotating blade. \nLocating Damage in Structural Systems\nDennis Bernal\, Professor\, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering \nThis presentation outlines the basic ideas behind some techniques used to localize damage applicable in cases where the structure is large\, and the number of sensors is small. Visual inspection has been the traditional procedure used to check the condition of structural systems but there is significant interest in devising ways to replace or enhance this approach by incorporating information from sensors.
