Impact Mechanics

Impact events are involved in a host of natural phenomena, as well as engineering practice.  Improved understanding of the mechanics and physics at play in such events will not only deepen our understanding of the planet and environment, but can provide opportunities for rapid innovation in impact-based manufacturing processes.  Non-trivial shock and wave phenomena occur when two bodies come into contact at high velocity. Interesting micro-mechanical response in the material develops as a result of non-equilibrium material mechanics seen at the associated high strain rates (>104 s-1).

The Impact Cluster at Northeastern University is making synergistic innovations in material and mechanical theory, as well as new computational and experimental characterization approaches.  Our interdisciplinary work is currently focused on making rapid progress in cold spray deposition technology, supported largely by Army Research Labs and industry.
